My name is Tiana Peterson and I am a Marriage & Family Therapist. I enjoy working with couples, individuals, and teens.
I became a therapist because I wanted to help people understand their responses and behaviors, without being victims to them. I recognize the difficulty we experience when trying to communicate our internal and personal struggles. Supporting others in their journey to restoration has become a passion of mine.
Being raise by my grandparents, I was one of many. I can remeber 10 of us living there at one time. As a result, I stuffed a lot of my feelings. The speace was always full and there was so much going on, it became hard to identify my personal importance. I was always well loved, but longed for true connection, specifically from my parents.
Growing up, I did find community and safety within my family and church circle groups, but I lacked confidence and a sense of purpose. I found it difficult to find my significance in the midst of my atmosphere because of my attachment issues and lack of emotional connection within my family. I carried a high level of fear and anxiety, experiencing repetitive panic attacks in my adolescent years.
For a long time I didn't know what it took to heal because I hadn't seen it. It seemed like everybody just did what they knew to do, to keep going. So many people, even elders in my family, would go from one thing or person to the next, without ever processing their confusion, discomfort, or pain. Never questioning what caused them to stuff and run in the first place.
As an adult with children of my own, I decided that I wanted more. I wanted to know my father, and I wanted a real relationship with my mother. I didn't want to live and operate in a deficit anymore. Tired of being the victim; holding myself hostage to my pain and pride- I chose to heal.
As I committed to the process of healing through prayer, journaling, and cultivating my relationship with God- he restored me and my relationships. My relationships aren't perfect, but I have learned to be actively engaged with them. I know this isn't typical "therapeutic" lingo- but its my truth!
These life lessons helped me so much that I wanted to encourage and support others in learning to process their "stuff", so they could ultimately have better relationships with people, places, and things.
After working for the government for 15 years, I decided to support my passion and get my Masters in Marriage & Family Therapy from Indiana Weslyn University. While I am skilled in several therapetuic approaches, I enjoy using techniques from Narrative Therapy, Emotional Focused Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, and Solution Focused Family Therapy.
I offer a facilitative style of counseling, connecting with my client through their personhood and life experience. I collaborate with clients to identify challenges, embrace change, identify opportunities for growth, set goals, and create a plan of action for change. I can be a pusher at times, but will always align with your comfort level.
